Ascension Perks

Ascension Perks are permanent, empire-wide upgrades unlocked by finishing a tradition tree or researching Ascension Theory. An empire can hold up to 8 at once, making the order you pick them one of the biggest strategic forks in the mid-to-late game.

Ascension Perks are one of the most important strategic forks in the mid-game. Each empire can hold up to 8 at once, and which ones are available to pick depends on both your tradition/tech progress and the tier system.

The tier system

Ascension perks are grouped into four tiers:

  • Tier 0: available from the very start of the game.
  • Tier 1: requires 1 previous ascension perk already taken.
  • Tier 2: requires 2 previous ascension perks already taken.
  • Tier 3: requires 3 previous ascension perks already taken.

This means your early perk picks partially gate which later perks you can even see — a Tier 3 perk you want might be locked behind needing three earlier picks first, so it’s worth planning a few perks ahead rather than deciding one at a time in isolation.

Since an empire can adopt at most 7 tradition trees, you’ll unlock seven slots by completing trees; the eighth slot only comes from researching the Ascension Theory technology. In practice, that means the full 8-perk build is a late-game luxury for empires with strong research — most games are played with 5–7 perks, so each slot is more precious than it looks.

How to think about picking

Ascension perks broadly fall into a few categories:

  • Expansion-focused: lower colonization/migration costs, reduce empire size penalties — good for a wide-expansion playstyle.
  • Military-focused: boost ship stats or unlock special military units — useful if you’re gearing up for the endgame crisis or external conquest.
  • Ascension paths (biological / synthetic / psionic): reshape your species’ entire development path. This is arguably the single highest-impact decision in the late game, and it’s usually irreversible once chosen.

If you own the Shadows of the Shroud DLC, most ascension perks also grant +30 Attunement with certain Shroud patrons — worth factoring in if you’re pursuing psionic content, since your perk choices now also nudge your Shroud relationships.

Strong picks by game phase

Early game (slots 1–2): Executive Vigor (+100 edict fund — lets you run expensive edicts far earlier than your unity income would otherwise allow) and Interstellar Dominion (−20% influence cost on claims and starbases, which compounds enormously during the expansion race) are the classic openers. An ascension path perk also belongs here if your build is built around one.

Mid game (slots 3–5): Master Builders (faster and parallel megastructure construction, cheaper habitats) and Arcology Project (unlocks the decision to restore a relic world or convert a planet into an ecumenopolis — requires the Utopia DLC and serious alloy income) define the economic endgame. Galactic Wonders, which unlocks the Dyson Sphere, Ring World, and Matter Decompressor, should be slotted the moment Mega-Engineering is close — see our megastructures overview for the full unlock chain.

Late game (slots 6–8): Defender of the Galaxy (+50% damage against crisis factions) is the default crisis-prep pick, and Galactic Contender does similar work against Fallen/Awakened Empires. Colossus Project (Apocalypse DLC) unlocks the Colossus planet-killer chassis, and Become the Crisis (Nemesis DLC) opens the menace track if you’re playing the villain — both are commitment picks, not fillers.

Ascension paths deserve their own plan

The ascension path perks — Engineered Evolution (genetic), Mind over Matter (psionic), The Flesh is Weak (cybernetic), and Synthetic Evolution (synthetic) — work differently from everything else on this list: each unlocks an entire tradition tree plus a special agenda, an empire can only ever take one of them, and you need two prior perks plus a free tradition slot available. Certain origins and civics lock you into (or out of) specific paths. Because the choice is exclusive and permanent, decide your path during empire creation, not when the second slot opens — our psionic ascension build and machine assimilator build pages show what committed path builds look like.

Planning your 8-perk order: a step-by-step

  1. Pick your ascension path first (or deliberately skip one) — it’s the only choice that excludes other options.
  2. List your two must-have Tier 2/3 perks (e.g. Galactic Wonders, Arcology Project) and count backward: which Tier 0/1 picks are you willing to spend to unlock them?
  3. Match early picks to your opener — wide empires get more from Interstellar Dominion; tech or unity builds get more from Executive Vigor or Transcendent Learning.
  4. Time economy perks with projects. Master Builders is wasted if you take it 30 years before your first habitat; Arcology Project is wasted before you have 20k alloys banked.
  5. Reserve one late slot for the crisis. If the endgame crisis spawns at 2400, Defender of the Galaxy taken at 2380 is a full-strength pick; taken at 2250 it sat idle for decades.

Common mistake

Don’t just pick a perk to “fill the slot” if it doesn’t fit your current build. Ascension perks are limited (only 8 slots, ever) and can’t be swapped, so a poorly-chosen pick can leave your mid-to-late game strategy scattered. Before unlocking a new slot, be clear on your development direction for the next 50–100 years, and check whether a perk you want is gated behind the tier system before committing to earlier picks that don’t excite you as much.

The flip side of the same mistake: don’t hoard slots waiting for the “perfect” perk either. A strong Tier 0 pick taken at year 30 often outperforms a slightly-better-on-paper Tier 2 pick taken at year 90, because bonuses compound. Aim to have a plan, but keep your slots working.

FAQ

Can I remove or refund an ascension perk? No. Picks are permanent for the campaign — this is why the planning step matters more than the individual power of any single perk.

Do I need DLC for the good perks? The tier system and many strong perks are base game, but several headline perks are DLC-gated: Arcology Project (Utopia), Colossus Project (Apocalypse), Become the Crisis (Nemesis), and most ascension paths (Utopia / Machine Age). Check the DLC requirement in the perk tooltip before planning around it.

Is Ascension Theory worth researching? Yes, if your research engine can afford it — the eighth perk slot plus a unity bonus is a genuine power spike, and for tall empires it’s often how they reach parity with wide empires’ tree count.

What if the AI took a perk I wanted — is it exclusive? No, ascension perks aren’t unique across empires. Every empire picks from the same list independently; only your tier progress gates your options.
