Dyson Sphere

A Dyson Sphere is a megastructure built around a star, delivering a massive energy output boost — but it also significantly alters the light environment of the system it's built in.

A Dyson Sphere is the flagship energy-focused megastructure — once complete, it delivers energy output far beyond conventional power buildings. It’s also one of the few megastructures where the construction itself changes the environment of the system, and it can’t be built everywhere: binary and trinary star systems, and systems with a pulsar, neutron star, or black hole, are all off-limits.

Two different construction paths

If you own the Machine Age DLC, you build a Dyson Swarm first — a functional megastructure in its own right — then upgrade it into a full Dyson Sphere, which starts from an advanced construction stage and inherits the Swarm’s existing effects. Without Machine Age, you build the Dyson Sphere directly from scratch. If you also own Nemesis, a completed Dyson Sphere can be further upgraded as part of the Kaleidoscope situation.

Trade-offs to consider before building

Once complete, a Dyson Sphere blocks the light of its star, which affects any planets or light-dependent buildings (like certain agricultural worlds) in that system. Before committing, check whether that environmental change is acceptable for your setup.

Staged construction

A Dyson Sphere is usually built in multiple stages, each consuming significant resources and time. It’s best tackled during a stable financial window with no pressing war — don’t let it tie up your production capacity for an extended period without finishing it.

When it’s worth building

Given the steep tech prerequisites and long build time, a Dyson Sphere is generally a mid-to-late game energy solution — better suited to an empire that’s already past the early expansion phase and is starting to plan long-term production capacity.
