Enigmatic Fortress

The Enigmatic Fortress is a massive guardian space station that spawns in a random class A star system, defended by named platforms (Ancient Vault, Guardian, Warden, Defender, Sentinel). After defeating its defenses, you have limited time to complete a follow-up event chain before it repowers and must be fought again.

The Enigmatic Fortress is one of the more mechanically distinct Guardian encounters — it’s a fixed space station (not something you “discover” via a science ship survey), guarded by five different defense platforms: Ancient Vault, Ancient Guardian, Ancient Warden, Ancient Defender, and Ancient Sentinel, each running standard ship components you can scout and counter like a normal fleet engagement.

Those five platform types add up to a real fight: one Ancient Vault, two Ancient Guardians, two Ancient Wardens, four Ancient Defenders, and eight Ancient Sentinels — seventeen installations in total, which is why the Fortress reads as a mid-game fleet check rather than an early-game one.

Two stages: combat, then a timed event chain

  1. Defeat the defense platforms. Since they use regular ship components (kinetic artillery, dark matter shields, neutronium armor, point-defense), you can actually check what you’re up against and design a counter-fleet the same way you would for any other fight — see Ship Design Basics.
  2. Complete the follow-up event chain before the timer runs out. This is the part that catches people off guard — if you don’t finish the event chain in time, the Fortress repowers itself, and you have to defeat the defense platforms all over again.

A few combat specifics worth planning around. The platforms’ weapons lean almost entirely kinetic — artillery and autocannons with some point-defense — so shield-heavy fleets blunt most of their incoming damage. Their own defenses, on the other hand, stack heavy shields and armor over dark matter reactors, so your damage should mix kinetic (to strip shields) with energy (to chew armor) rather than going all-in on one type. Bring a comfortably superior fleet rather than an even match: losing means rebuilding while the Fortress sits intact, and the event chain only starts once the platforms are down. If you’ve made contact with the Curator enclave, they’ll also share the Fortress’s backstory and sell their standard guardian damage modifier, which takes real sting out of the engagement.

The event chain, step by step

Once the last platform falls you’re prompted to start the expedition — with either a transport or a science vessel — and from that point the whole chain is tracked with visible timers in your situation log. The chain has three decision points, and each wrong answer (or an expired timer) repowers the vault:

  1. Gaining entry. Either send an army transport as a Demolitions Team — this proceeds but permanently loses the army, so send a single cheap assault army — or use a science ship for a Local Power Surge, in which case go with the lower estimate (−50 energy). The higher estimate (−500 energy) repowers the vault.
  2. The Tower. Four options are offered and only one succeeds: “Rearrange the metal tori on the poles.” Every other choice repowers the Fortress.
  3. The Pivot. Three safe paths exist: Home System Research on “the middle” option, supplying 10 Dark Matter from your stockpile, or completing the Black Hole Research special project. The “beginning” and “end” research options repower the vault. Never choose Use Force: it fails outright, destroys the vault and every ship in the system, and turns every habitable planet in the system into a Tomb World (uninhabitable ones into Molten Worlds).

A shortcut for machine empires

If you own the Machine Age DLC and your empire has a Machine or Mechanical founder species (or meets certain tech/tradition prerequisites), you can skip the event chain entirely and unlock the Enigmatic Fortress trait and the Leviathan Tech Genesis technology directly.

The qualifying alternatives beyond a Machine or Mechanical founder are the Integrated Anatomy tradition or one of the late AI technologies (Artificial Administration, Binary Motivators, or Quantum Neuro-Links). Taking the shortcut means trading away the chain’s normal payout — the research windfall and the Enigmatic components — in exchange for the trait, so it’s a build decision rather than a strict upgrade.

Rewards

Successfully completing the chain pays out:

  • 1000-5000 research in each of the three fields (Physics, Society, and Engineering) — a genuine mid-game tech jump.
  • The Enigmatic Encoder technology: an auxiliary-slot component granting +5 chance to hit and +5 tracking.
  • The Enigmatic Decoder technology: an auxiliary-slot component granting +1 disengagement opportunity.
  • The Unravelling Enigma achievement, and — like most guardians — defeating it can also kick off a Leviathan Parade opportunity across your colonies.

Why it’s worth doing

The Enigmatic Fortress remains one of the most rewarding pieces of content from the original Leviathans DLC, and understanding the two-stage, timer-sensitive structure ahead of time means you won’t get caught having to re-fight the defense platforms because you didn’t realize the event chain was on a clock.

Common mistakes

  • Sending your real army on the transport in step 1. The Demolitions Team option deletes the army — send one disposable assault army, not your ground invasion stack.
  • Letting the timer lapse. If your only science ship is across the galaxy when the platforms fall, you can lose the window entirely. Pre-position a science ship in the system before the killing blow.
  • Picking Use Force out of impatience in step 3. It’s the single worst outcome available — you lose the rewards, the vault, and every planet in the system.
  • Engaging the moment you find it. The Fortress isn’t going anywhere; fighting it with a marginal fleet just feeds it your ships.

FAQ

Which DLC adds the Enigmatic Fortress? Leviathans — it’s one of that expansion’s original guardians.

What happens if the timer runs out mid-chain? The Fortress repowers, its defense platforms return, and you have to defeat it again to restart the event chain from the beginning.

Is there more than one per game? No — a single Enigmatic Fortress spawns per galaxy, in one random class A star system.

Can anyone skip the event chain? Only empires meeting the Machine Age conditions described above. Everyone else has to run the full chain to claim the rewards.
