Kinetic weapons: reliable baseline damage

Kinetic weapons (autocannons, mass drivers, and their larger cousins) are the workhorse projectile family. Their defining trait is a strong damage bonus against shields paired with a serious penalty against armor — a basic mass driver deals roughly 150% damage to shields but only 50% to armor, at 75% accuracy. That profile makes kinetics your shield-breaker: they strip shields quickly, then hand the kill to your armor-eating weapons.

The family splits into two branches with opposite range profiles:

  • Plasma launchers push the anti-armor profile to the extreme — devastating against armor and hull, nearly useless against shields.
  • Ion cannons are the odd one out in the family: they’re the anti-shield energy weapon, which lets an energy-focused fleet cover its blind spot without touching the kinetic tech tree.

Because kinetics and energy cover each other’s weaknesses so cleanly, a mixed fleet is stronger than the sum of its parts — which is why energy weapons remain a mainstay in most balanced compositions.

Missiles and torpedoes: high damage, but interceptable

Missile-class weapons hit hard at long range, and they come with a unique perk: explosive weapons ignore shields entirely and strike armor and hull directly. Torpedoes lean even further into that niche, trading everything for heavy anti-armor alpha damage on small hulls — a squadron of torpedo corvettes punching far above its weight is a classic for a reason.

The catch: missiles and torpedoes can be shot down by Point-Defense weapons. If the enemy fleet is running heavy point-defense, your actual missile damage output will fall well short of the numbers on paper. Swarmer missiles exist partly to answer this — cheap, fast, and fired in volume, they saturate point-defense coverage so your heavier munitions get through. If you’re leaning on missiles, keep an eye on how much point-defense the enemy is fielding, and pair missiles with direct-fire weapons so the enemy’s interception capacity gets spread thin.

Armor- and shield-penetrating weapons: situational picks

Some weapons are specifically built to counter armor or shields, with a significant damage bonus against that defense type — and almost nothing against the other. These aren’t a “safe default” pick; they should be chosen based on scouted intel about the enemy fleet, and swapping them in at the right moment is one of the highest-value tweaks in fleet design.

A related family takes the opposite philosophy: penetrating weapons like disruptors, cloud lightning, and arc emitters ignore both shields and armor and hit hull directly. Raw damage is lower than specialized weapons and range is often short, but they’re the clean answer to thick, balanced defenses — including several crisis fleets.

How point-defense and strike craft fit in

Point-defense guns barely attack ships at all — they exist to shoot down incoming missiles, torpedoes, and strike craft. Flak guns are the close cousin specialized against strike craft, and a destroyer screen running point-defense in front of your capital ships can neutralize most of a missile fleet’s output. Strike craft sit on the other side of that equation: extreme-range damage launched from hangar bays, which evaporates against fleets with real point-defense coverage.

  • Early game (corvettes): a simple mass driver + laser mix covers both defense types while fleets are small and intel is scarce.
  • Mid game (destroyers/cruisers): start specializing hulls — point-defense destroyers screening cruisers that carry plasma plus railguns.
  • Late game (battleships): long-range spinal mounts and artillery, swarmer missiles to saturate enemy point-defense, and escorts to keep torpedo corvettes off your flanks.

Common mistakes

  • Running a pure missile fleet into stacked point-defense and wondering why nothing landed.
  • Ignoring tracking: big guns have poor tracking, so they whiff constantly against evasive corvettes — keep some autocannons or small mounts around to handle them.
  • Mixing short and long range on one hull: the short-range weapons never fire from standoff distance — keep ranges consistent per hull.
  • Never redesigning after scouting: the counter table only pays off if you actually refit between wars.
