Cosmic Storms

Released: 9/10/2024 · Price: ~$10 (story packs are typically priced lower than major expansions — check the Steam store for current pricing) · Rating 3.8/5

Cosmic Storms introduces periodic, recurring storms that sweep across the galaxy — different storm types affect the systems they pass through differently (an energy storm hitting energy output, a bio storm hitting population, etc.), requiring players to plan defenses ahead of time.

What’s actually in it

The storm system essentially adds a layer of “dynamic environmental variable” to the galaxy map — previously, a system’s environment was largely static, and this expansion makes it possible for the same star region to look different at different points in the game, adding a bit more variance to long-term play.

Who should buy this

If you’ve already gotten used to standard galaxy exploration and want a bit of “the environment occasionally throws you a curveball or a surprise,” this expansion delivers that novelty. If your priority is core systemic depth (ascension, diplomacy, economy), other expansions should come first.

What's Included

Pros

  • The dynamic storm system adds a variable that wasn't there before, cutting down on repetitiveness
  • Reasonably priced

Cons

  • Limited impact on overall game depth — more of an ambiance/variable layer than a core system

Is It Worth It?

A lighter systemic add-on that introduces a dynamic variable to the galaxy map. Players who enjoy 'the environment actively pushing back' will find it interesting; players chasing core system depth can rank it lower.
